Asian Eye director named among world’s most influential ophthalmologists
A Filipino ophthalmologist at the Asian Eye Institute (Asian Eye) has received recognition once again from an international publication for eye doctors as one of the most influential eye care professionals in
the world.
The Ophthalmologist Magazine has named Dr. Robert Edward Ang, director of the AEI’s Cornea and Refractive Surgery Service, the lone Filipino among 100 eye physicians that make up its 2024 Power List.
Ang, a distinguished specialist in cataract, glaucoma, and cornea and refractive LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) surgery, was also included in the prestigious list in 2018.
The Ophthalmologist, the leading global publication in the field of ophthalmology, compiles its annual Power List, based on nominations submitted by peers. These nominations go through a rigorous
evaluation that a panel of international experts conducts to determine the clinical expertise, innovation, contributions, and leadership in the global ophthalmology community of the nominees.
As concurrent AEI director for research and training, his collaborative work with leading pharmaceutical and medical device companies has led to innovations in cataract intraocular lenses, laser treatments for
presbyopia (gradual loss of the eyes’ ability to focus on nearby objects) and minimally invasive glaucoma devices.
Ang is similarly recognized for his pioneering research on technologies that enhance the diagnosis and treatment of various eye conditions. He likewise has ongoing research projects on cataracts, glaucoma, refractive lenses, and laser eye surgery.
Ang also has received multiple awards from the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery; the Asia Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgery; the International Society of Refractive Surgery; the Philippine Academy of Ophthalmology; and the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology.
