BFP strengthens capabilities through modernization program
In a significant stride towards modernization, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) announced that it has substantially enhanced its strength and capabilities to align with the demands of the contemporary era.
Director Louie Puracan, BFP chief, emphasized that the government’s modernization initiatives have played a pivotal role in enabling the bureau to confront modern challenges effectively. This includes the augmentation of fire trucks, ambulances, and overall equipment within the BFP.
Puracan disclosed that the commitment to modernization remains steadfast, with the government planning to allocate funds for the BFP’s modernization program in the upcoming 2024 fiscal year. As a testament to its dedication, congress is set to grant an additional P3 billion to further bolster the BFP’s modernization efforts.
Notably, the BFP earned an unmodified opinion from the Commission on Audit (COA) for the first time in the fiscal year 2022, achieving a perfect score of 20. The COA report indicated a remarkable 93 percent score, equivalent to an excellent rating in the first Financial Performance Rating report.
The COA’s endorsement underscores its support for the BFP’s modernization program, emphasizing the necessity for the bureau to adapt to the demands of the modern era.
As part of the ongoing modernization program, 54 new fire trucks have been distributed to various local fire stations.
The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), headed by Secretary Benhur Abalos, highlighted the significance of these acquisitions, particularly the 1,000-gallon capacity fire trucks. These trucks are strategically allocated to fire stations lacking sufficient firefighting capabilities.
Abalos stated, “The distribution of these modern and innovative fire trucks is proof that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. prioritizes, and the DILG prioritizes, the safety of our communities and people.”
Out of the 54 fire trucks, the Bicol Region received the highest allocation with eight, followed by Caraga with seven, and Northern Mindanao with five.
Furthermore, Secretary Abalos assured that alongside acquiring new firefighting assets, there will be a concerted effort to develop the skills and expertise of firefighters, ensuring a comprehensive approach to enhancing the overall firefighting capabilities of the BFP.
