Trinity Move for Fitness: World Sustainability Day Celebration 2023
The concept of sustainability has been around since 500 BC. But the word “sustainability” first emerged in the 1970s, when the focus shifted from pollution to a global concern about the survival of the human race.
Today, sustainability merits a global celebration every October. It must be noted that most international days are proposed and approved by consensus of the States of the United Nations General Assembly.
This year, the Trinity Move for Fitness event celebrates World Sustainability Day on October 26, organized by Trinity University of Asia’s College of Hospitality and Tourism Management together with the Human Kinetics Department and the Media and Communication Department of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education. The whole day event features fitness activities, from walking and dancing to swimming and recreational games. Exciting prizes await winners of student competitions in Photo Essay, Extemporaneous Speaking for the Environment, and GORA Lane Vlogging.
GORA stands for the Green Open Reclaimed Access (GORA) Lane project of the Quezon City Government. It is a 5.39-kilometer pedestrian corridor, which will pass through Doña Hemady Ave., Scout Tobias and Mother Ignacia Ave., and provide residents with access to three major roads, namely, Aurora Blvd., Quezon Ave., and EDSA. This is part of the Quezon City Mayor’s 14-point Agenda to promote sustainable development, interconnectivity, and reduce air pollution.
In 1987, the United Nations Brundtland Commission defined sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
Clearly, sustainability is not just a modern buzzword. It is a word that encapsulates our values and lifestyle. In order to enable our young with the ability to meet their own needs, education must come to the fore. Knowledge comes before action.
