Salcedo Auctions sets new world record with Hidalgo’s ‘La Pintura’ selling at Php78,256,000.
Last Saturday, 21 September, Salcedo Auctions held its highly anticipated ‘Important Philippine Art’ sale as part of its month-long auction celebration ‘The Well-Appointed Life.’ Held at the Rigodon Ballroom of the Peninsula Manila, the sale drew a standing-room only crowd in anticipation of the highlight piece: Félix Resurrección Hidalgo’s c. 1890s oil on canvas work ‘La Pintura.’
Bidding started at Php18M with four contenders on the phone. Over the course of the next few minutes, bidding quickly gained traction, soon reaching the Php50M mark at which only 3 competitors remained until finally, one bidder prevailed at a hammer price of Php67M. This unprecedented result sets a new world auction record for any work by the artist. The former world record was achieved at an auction in Madrid, Spain in October 2018 for an oil on canvas entitled ‘Pareja de jóvenes tagalos ante un rio’ which sold at a hammer price of Php 51,600,122.
The sale marks an important milestone in the cultural and historical appreciation of Hidalgo–the quiet giant of Philippine art. As written on Salcedo Auctions’ social media: “Though perhaps not as sensationalized as his
contemporaries, Hidalgo’s life was one spent in the pursuit of beauty and excellence, a noble quality which shines through in his art more than a century later.”
