DOE cites Visayas power firms’ compliance
The Department of Energy (DOE) has recognized MORE Electric and Power Corporation (MORE Power) and Negros Electric and Power Corporation (Negros Power) for timely and complete compliance with critical reportorial requirements, underscoring the growing importance of accurate data in managing the country’s power sector amid rising demand.
Plaques of appreciation, signed by DOE Undersecretary Rowena Cristina L. Guevarra, were awarded at the Energy Center in Bonifacio Global City. The recognition cited both utilities’ adherence to Department Circular No. DC2023-03-0005, which sets supplemental policies for the systematic management of reportorial requirements in the electric power industry for 2025.
The DOE said the circular ensures reliable and timely data flow from distribution utilities, a key factor in monitoring grid performance and planning future capacity. With demand increasing due to industrial growth, the shift to renewable energy, and climate-related risks, the department emphasized that complete reporting enables better outage prevention and policy decisions.
MORE Power, which serves Iloilo City and nearby areas, and Negros Power, the sole distributor in Central Negros, both play a role in supporting the DOE’s push for a more data-driven Visayas grid.
“Full compliance equips DOE with important insights that may contribute to accelerating projects like grid modernization and renewables rollout,” said Roel Z. Castro, president and chief executive officer of both firms.
“Timely reporting helps streamline DOE approvals, cuts delays, and aids in advancing national electrification targets,” he added.
The recognition comes as the Philippines aims to achieve full household electrification by 2028. The DOE has previously flagged persistent data gaps among non-compliant utilities as a constraint in long-term planning, particularly in areas where renewable energy integration and rural electrification depend on accurate consumption and reliability data.
The Visayas grid, covering the franchise areas of both utilities, has seen recent upgrades and renewable energy developments, including solar and geothermal projects in Negros and emerging offshore wind prospects off Panay.
