Taiwan honors model Filipino workers
The government of Taiwan conferred honors to two exceptional Filipino workers to mark its celebration of Labor Day last week, the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) reported on Sunday (May 6).
OFWs Angel Vie Gonzales Corral and Maylyn Coderis Bajar received the prestigious National Model Worker Award this year from Taiwan’s Ministry of Labor, the MECO report said.
In ceremonies held at the Grand Hai Lai Hotel in Taipei last April 29, Corral and Bajar stood alongside eight other migrant workers from various labor-exporting countries for their “outstanding contributions and remarkable achievements.”
“We are very much delighted that our kababayans in Taiwan continue to get rewarded and reap recognition for exceptional work ethic and innovation,” MECO chairman Silvestre H. Bello III said. He noted that OFWs had been in the roster of awardees among migrant workers in Taiwan even at the height of the Covid 19 pandemic.
“They remain, no doubt, to be the pride of our nation,” Bello said.
Corral, working for over six years in Taiwan, is employed as a factory worker at the New Dentronics Company Ltd. in Chiayi. She was recognized for her outstanding performance as a production line leader.
She did not only display exemplary leadership but has also represented migrant workers in company meetings and trainings. She is a recipient of 15 certificates of achievement for enhancing work efficiency and reducing production losses. Known among her colleagues for her optimism and eagerness to learn, Corral easily adapts to various work situations and consistently completes tasks assigned to her.
Bajar, on the other hand, a home-based caretaker for nine years in New Taipei, was honored for her invaluable service, initiative and exemplary work ethic. She provided dedicated care to a sick employer who is suffering from Parkinson’s disease, and requiring specialized care including nasogastric feeding, respiratory therapy, and assistance with mobility.
Her work extended beyond basic care as she implemented a rehabilitation plan and even innovated a “DIY urine bottle device” to bring comfort during the night. She was commended for her responsibility, patience and sincerity — all instrumental in improving her employer’s health and mobility.
The selection process for the award involved nomination from employer/companies and recommendations from Taiwan local governments, with the candidates for national excellent migrant level chosen by expert panels.
According to MECO, the Taiwan labor ministry highlighted three key characteristics shared by the outstanding workers: exceptional performance, dedication to work and the spirit of innovation. The awards, MECO added, serve as tribute to the valuable contribution of labor to Taiwan’s progress.
All awardees received a plaque of recognition, a medal and cash prize from the labor ministry. Taiwan also invited family members of Corral and Bajar to grace the event and hosted their stay and tour of the city. The two also had a chance to pay a courtesy visit to Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen.
