PUP Launches Research Program on AI Ethics and Governance

Manila, Philippines – Polytechnic University of the Philippines, a leading higher education institution in the Philippines, has announced the launch of a research program focused on artificial intelligence (AI) ethics and governance. The program aims to address the growing need for responsible AI development and deployment in the country.

The research program brings together experts and scholars from various fields, including computer science, law, philosophy, and sociology, to explore the ethical, cultural, and social implications of AI technology. The program focuses on developing guidelines and frameworks for AI governance that are aligned with the country’s values, culture, and priorities.

“As AI technology continues to transform how we Filipinos live our lives, it is important that we ensure its responsible use and development. It is also crucial that higher education institutions like PUP should be at the forefront of promoting a culturally grounded AI governance,” said Dr. Manuel M. Muhi, President of Polytechnic University of the Philippines.

The research program covers various topics related to AI ethics and governance, including privacy and data protection, fair treatment, transparency and accountability, and societal impact assessment. The program explores the role of AI in various sectors, such as healthcare, education, finance, and transportation.

The research program is supervised by two research institures of the university, the Research Institute for Culture and Language and the Research Institute for Strategic Foresight and Innovation, both under the Office of the Vice President for Research, Extension, and Development.

“Our research program on AI ethics and governance provides a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge sharing,” said Dr. Anna Ruby P. Gapasin, vice president for research of the university. “The university in 2020 started its initiatives to make PUP a nexus of AI Ethics,” she continued.

Polytechnic University of the Philippines research program on AI ethics and governance is supported by various partners from industry, government, and academia. These partners include the Office of Senator Pia Cayetano, Chairperson of Senate’s Committee on SDGs and Futures Thinking, Philosophical Association of the Philippines, academic institutions in the Philippines and abroad.

One of the important outputs of the program includes a research-based book entitled “AI Ethics Primer for Filipinos” which was a product of collaborative efforts of various scholars from PUP, University of San Carlos, Philosophical Association of the Philippines, and the De La Salle University-Manila. The book will be accessible to the public for free come May this year. Other outputs also include research works on Filipinos’ attitude, awareness, and behavior on Artificial intelligence, and how Philippine media news outfit portray AI. There are more research projects that are in the pipelines.
