Zuellig celebrates 10 years of training LGUs in health governance
Zuellig Family Foundation (ZFF) recently awarded one local government unit and 19 individuals who championed the health of their people, as part of its 10th year celebration of training local political leaders and health officials in health leadership and governance.
After shifting from being a corporate foundation to the Zuellig family’s philanthropic vehicle as a way of giving back to their country of birth, ZFF began to focus on health of rural poor through a strategy it put in place in 2008 to enable local government officials and their health officers understand the challenges confronting their local health systems and address them with sustainable solutions.
In 2013, the Department of Health (DOH) partnered with ZFF, enabling the nationwide rollout of the Health Leadership and Governance Program (HLGP) that has so far trained thousands of health leaders—governors, mayors, provincial and municipal health officers, and DOH officials.
On September 25, ZFF recognized during a ceremony held at the AIM Conference Center the municipality of Alilem, Ilocos Sur for excellence in public health governance in terms of improving their facility-based and skilled birth attendant deliveries, absence of maternal deaths and innovations in health systems. The award was received by Alilem Mayor Ruel Sumabat.
Other awardees include Dr. Myrna Cabotaje, former health director of DOH in Ilocos region and now OIC Undersecretary for Public Health Services Team; , Bridging Leader in Public Health; Dr. Gilson Laspinas, Sultan Kudarat; Dr. Helen Minguez, Concepcion, Iloilo; and Dr. Jocelyn Encienzo, Kidapawan City in Cotabato—who were all recognized as ZFF Bridging Leader in Public Health.
