BFP boosts modernization efforts for enhanced firefighting
MANILA, Philippines — In response to the escalating threat of man-made fire disasters in urban areas, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in the Philippines is accelerating its modernization initiatives to bolster firefighting capabilities and safeguard vulnerable communities especially that summer season is approaching.
BFP Chief Director Louie Puracan emphasized the urgent need to adapt to the challenges of the modern era, citing the growing risk of catastrophic fires, particularly impacting low-income and rural areas. As part of a comprehensive strategy to enhance community resilience, the BFP is actively preparing Filipinos for current and future disaster impacts.
Puracan highlighted the success of the government’s ongoing modernization initiative, equipping firefighters with the strength and tools necessary to address contemporary challenges effectively. The program includes an expansion of the BFP’s fleet, encompassing fire trucks, ambulances, and firefighting equipment.
Looking ahead to 2024, Puracan affirmed that the government will continue allocating funds to support the BFP’s modernization program. Additionally, Congress is set to allocate an extra P3 billion as part of the broader efforts to modernize the BFP.
In a notable achievement for the BFP, the Commission on Audit (COA) issued an unmodified opinion for the fiscal year 2022, awarding the bureau a perfect score of 20. The COA report highlighted the BFP’s excellent financial performance, earning a 93 percent score.
Recognizing the importance of a modernized firefighting force, the COA endorsed the BFP’s proactive stance toward modernization to align with the demands of the contemporary era.
As part of the ongoing modernization program, 54 state-of-the-art fire trucks, each with a 1,000-gallon capacity, have been distributed to local fire stations across the country.
The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) headed by Secretary Benhur Abalos commended the distribution of these innovative fire trucks, emphasizing President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s prioritization of community safety.
