NEA administrator commends Zambo power coop for enhanced services
The National Electrification Administration (NEA) has acknowledged the array of innovative enhancements introduced and executed by the New Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative’s (Zamelco) management and board.
These improvements have significantly impacted the overall performance and service quality provided to its member-consumers, ensuring a dependable power supply.
NEA Administrator Antonio Almeda lauded Zamelco for its notable advancements in key performance indicators (KPI), including the reduction of system losses, enhanced collection efficiency, and prudent fiscal management.
During his recent visit to Zamboanga City, Almeda conducted an on-site evaluation of Zamelco’s operational landscape and conducted an audit in the franchise territory.
“The data speaks truthfully,” Almeda remarked.
“Zamelco’s key performance standards data places them in Category B. This achievement is truly gratifying. It underscores Zamelco’s consistent progress in enhancing its key performance indicators. Factors such as minimizing system losses, pursuing further improvements, bolstering collection efficiency, and ensuring sound management in collaboration with Crown Investment are at play,” he continued.
The NEA official also highlighted the turnaround of the local power cooperative, which was previously grappling with financial distress and nearing insolvency. This situation took a positive turn when Crown assumed control of Zamelco in 2018 through the Investment Management Contract (IMC).
“Recall that Zamelco was facing significant challenges, and the entry of Crown along with a P2.5 billion infusion facilitated the resolution of technical deficiencies. It is our aspiration that it ascends to Category A status in due course,” he emphasized.
Almeda also pointed out NEA records indicating Zamelco’s power rates are among the most competitive among cooperatives in Mindanao, standing as the second lowest in terms of power rates. “Without a doubt, Crown’s involvement has propelled Zamelco’s capacity development in both performance and service delivery,” he noted. “Zamelco’s journey of enhancing its services has been commendable.”
Presently, Zamelco is dedicated to further enhancing its power infrastructure by modernizing its equipment across all substations. Concurrently, the technical personnel receive consistent training to ensure their proficiency.
According to Zamelco Chief Management Officer Rommel Agan, their engineers and technical staff have undergone substantial professional development, acquiring greater qualifications and empowerment.
Residents have also testified to the marked improvement in services, with several expressing that the positive changes are palpable compared to previous experiences.
